Part 1 - Tate Modern to Southwark Cathedral

Today, we walked from the Tate Modern to Southwark Cathedral, collecting things along the way. I decided to collect and record lettering. I collected different types of lettering mainly by using wire, rubbings and taking photos.

Part 2 - Mapping

Bring in an object. Make a twin of it.

This is what I came up with...

Corsage No. 2

Apologies for the bad quality photos - the corsage looks better in real life fo' sure.

Newspaper Shirt

Having experimented with manipulating clothes in their original form, we then had to take them apart and re-assemble them into something new. I decided to remake my shirt out of newspaper - which made the shirt more fragile and uncomfortable, contrasting to before, when the shirt was old and worn.

To begin, I cut up the old shirt into sections to use as a template for the newspaper.

Here is the initial template for the newspaper shirt. I attached the different parts of the template together using masking tape, leaving the front open. I like the interesting patterns made by the text on the newspaper - mirroring the lines on the original shirt.

Using some of the parts of the original shirt, I made a corsage, to incorporate into the newspaper shirt.

This is the newspaper shirt completed - with the added corsage and belt (made from the original shirt). I wanted to join the newspaper and cotton together in the new shirt as they contrasted well with each other. To keep the corsage and belt attached to the newspaper, I used string.

Manipulating Clothes

This week we have been experimenting with sculpting clothes and manipulating their functions into something new - influenced by the work of Erwin Wurm (see below).

I used an old shirt as my item of clothing - here are some of my ideas...

Working in groups to create sculptures from our
clothes, then drawing them from observation

Matthew Darbyshire - Untitled: Shelf No. 5

I liked this piece of work immediately when I saw it as I was drawn in by the bright colours and cheap look of the items on display. When looking closer at the different shelves, I noticed that there were £1 price tags on the glasses - this seems to suggest that the artist is questioning an image of value - the items on the shelves aren't valuable, but are desirable in our society (e.g. Items from Ikea, Coca Cola glasses free from Mcdonalds).
